If you're anywhere near Oklahoma City, just steer toward Pioneer Pies. - Southern Living Magazine

Wouldn't you like to sink your teeth into a big ol' cut of pie right about now?

Several Varieties

In the local parlance it's always a "cut"-never a slice, a piece, a wedge, or a serving. By any name, thousands happily dig forks into some 30 bulging varieties every day, thanks to the sweet-toothed efforts of the Shapard family.

Brothers Ed and Bill Shapard and their wives Sandy and Veda are the driving forces behind these noteworthy desserts. They opened the first of three restaurants in 1982. Each is a country-style eatery where barbecue, stews, and cornbread satisfy hungry diners.

But the trademark of each location is the collection of gleaming showcases packed with deep-dish, 9-inch, flaky-crusted pies.
If you're in the mood for something fruity choose cherry, apple, blueberry, or peach. Feeling nutty? There's pecan, peanut butter, and peanut butter-chocolate. Splurge on rich German chocolate cream, French silk, Dutch apple, or lemon meringue. In the piled-high cream pie category find banana, butterscotch, chocolate, and coconut.
Calorie counters opt for sugarfree apple, coconut cream, cherry, or chocolate cream. Pies baked seasonally include fresh strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, pumpkin, and mince. On-site bakers also experiment with new items, which come and go on the menu.

Awesome any way you slice it

One innovation that pleases all is the famous five-cut divider. The Shapards developed the tool that with one forceful downstroke cuts a pie into five hefty sections. You won't see this big a slice-er, that is, cut-anywhere else.

So grab a fork and order up a cut. We say the Shapards can call it whatever they want, as long as they keep cranking out good pies.
